With this review, I want to be as clear and precise as possible as there isn’t much info out there for custom made dresses from China. With dresses like this, you want to get it right the first time and you don’t want to be taking chances.
We ordered this dress in ivory to be used as a semi formal wedding dress for a daytime, outdoor wedding. It’s totally perfect in every way! More details to follow. First, my e-mails were answered very quickly…even with a 12 hr. time difference (it’s custom made in China so you have to factor that in, in all fairness) Even tho the size we needed wasn’t listed,16W, with an e-mail, it was custom fitted to my daughter’s measurements after touching base with the DressyStar representative, Cherry. Cherry’s English is quite sufficient with no misunderstandings. Perhaps she grew up in the States? Cherry with DressyStar has been very courteous, helpful, prompt, and true to her word.
My Hispanic daughter is apple-shaped and barely reaches 5′. Most dresses don’t fit her torso with her short-waist. This dress is lovely on her. It holds everything where it belongs and she still breathes 😉 The multi-directional pleats are extraordinary and a good solution for an apple shape – it redirects the eyes. It also gives the illusion of lengthening her torso. With this dress, she’s no longer apple shaped but very shapely, indeed. 🙂 She couldn’t quit smiling while she was trying it on! She loves it!!! I did, too. Let me say, however, this dress would be quite lovely on the long svelt shapes if you are blessed with one of those. It’s just hard to find a dress that enhances the apple shape and this does the trick.
My daughter likes the look of a strapless dress but we didn’t want to be constantly needing to tug at it under the armpits to keep, ahem, her endowments in place. The tulle over the top of the bodice is a very nice solution for that. We were a bit concerned that the tulle on the shoulders appeared gray in the picture. In reality, the tulle is ivory to match the dress and the “jewels” are in the silver range. Silver, pearls, or Swarovski crystal would look nice with this dress. A necklace is probably not needed – drop earrings will suffice. The “jewels” are not beads as the title says…translation issue, I think. They are nice looking but obviously not real…we’ll save the real jewels for Princess Kate. We would prefer to have a beautiful dress for the one-wear occasion without having to take out a loan to pay for it. A bra strap WOULD show thru the tulle but my very buxom daughter discovered that a bra isn’t necessary – the bodice holds things in place. The bodice is soft and pliable, not stiff like a corset. Nonetheless, everything goes into the correct places without getting stabbed. With my daughter’s narrower shoulders, the part at the top of the dress fits like a cap sleeve – very elegant as it bares her upper bodice and seems to lengthen her neck. It may not fit other women with wider shoulders in the same way…for them, it would sit on top of the outer shoulder. We will probably go with flowers in her thick, shiny, black hair instead of a veil.
Be certain you measure correctly using the sizing model given by DressyStar, not Amazon. I measured on two different days and got different measurements. I’m glad I double measured as the dress came to fit like a glove – snug but not too tight.
The material has a great feel…soft, heavy and swishy. It flows wonderfully, it is high quality – as is even the lining. Wrinkles from shipping hung out within an hour. No need for steaming. It wasn’t dirty, horribly wrinkled, mismatched, poorly stitched or uneven as I’ve seen in a review on another dress – another company? I, too, have sewn for years (dress shirts, overcoats, bathing suits, drapery, upholstery, etc.) and know how much material, detail and time went into this pattern. I sew because I’m particular. Chiffon is not easy to work with as the pleats slip out from under the presser foot. I would imagine that the US stores are buying their expensive, off-the-rack dresses from this supplier, then marking them up considerably. We spent $150 (that includes shipping), not $1,500 and then having to have it altered for an additional fee. No one will know the difference. The $$ difference will go towards the honeymoon. I guess if you WANT to spend a lot of money on your wedding dress, the small, US dress shops will be happy to oblige. 😉
The shipping time was a concern for us as my daughter waited till the last minute to decide to get married this summer. ARRRGGGGHHH!!! From the moment of ordering with custom measurements until my daughter was trying it on was two weeks. We had a week to spare 😉 DressyStar sent it DHL. The Amazon rep was concerned with timing as she said the package had to clear both Chinese and US Customs but it wasn’t a problem…in this case, anyway. The dress came…

I will say even though the dress I ordered said ivory, I was almost expecting it to be a champagne color, but it was indeed a very light ivory, which is beautiful.
Now, the dress is as pictured, however, the photos online fail to show the beautiful embroidery on the top of the dress. Also, I didn’t realize the top has a layer of chiffon type material over the satin. It looks like the picture though, except, as I said, it does have more detail than I thought (I think it makes it even prettier).
As for sizing. I’m currently a size 12, but all the dresses I tried on were size 14, however I plan on losing a bit of weight. I almost ordered a size 10, but decided to go with the safe bet and got a 12. Well, if you use the chart, the dress is shockingly true to size. Needless to say, I won’t be able to lose the amount of weight I originally planned to, because if I do, I’ll have to alter the dress. Currently, it fits like a glove. My advice is to order based off the measurements you know your are or will be. Because its VERY TRUE TO SIZE
I couldn’t ask for a more perfect dress than this one. Its exactly what I wanted, and looks beautiful on. This is a dress that would easily cost upwards of a thousand dollars at stores like Davids Bridal. I’m more than happy with my purchase, and can’t wait until my fiancee sees me walking down the isle in it.
