Vogue’s Kate Moss special: first look

1. The freckles

There are two covers: you’re more likely to see the “natural” one, as the “bombshell” version – Bardot hair, smoky eyes, leopard-print fur – is a smaller run. It’s all about the natural one, anyway: with the freckles and the cheekbones, it’s like a grown-up sequel to Kate’s iconic 1990 The Face cover – the one with the feather headdress – shot by Corinne Day.

2. The unexpectedly OCD handbag collection shocker

“My handbags are arranged by: black vintage, black daytime, black evening, bling evening, Chanel, colourful daytime, and, lastly, simple clutches.” This reminds us of the time we had lunch with Kate (I love saying that) and she “revealed” that she never wore gold and silver jewellery together.

3. What Kate wears that we now want

Jimmy Choo Duchesse pumps: just add a skirt.

(i) The fluffy grey Virginia coat from Whistles, although unfortunately costs a rather un-high-street £1,500. Kate wears it over a chainmail silver dress, but in non-supermodel-world it would look great with jeans and ankleboots.
(ii) The Jimmy Choo Duchesse pumps, £495. Classic party shoes with a black lace pompom. Kate teams them with a black lace bodysuit; again, in the real world we might wear them slightly differently. Like, add a skirt.

4. The surprisingly traditional interiors shocker

The pictures inside Kate’s home show brass candlesticks in pairs. Lace curtains. Silver tea light holders on the mantelpiece. Glass decanters. A dark wood four-poster bed and antiqued gold mirrors, in the guest room. It’s all a bit more similar to a typical posh middle aged Highgate neighbours than we thought it would be, somehow. Also, she says she’s “got quite into her gardening”, and we get a glimpse of neat topiary and stone urns. On the other hand, there is a giant artwork in Kate’s kitchen with the legend “FUCK IT”, which Kate describes as her version of a “Home Sweet Home”, and leopard print scatter cushions in the room where former occupant Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote poetry. And Jamie uses Marc Quinn’s nude sculpture of Kate as a hatstand, which is a think-piece all in itself.

5. The best quote about Kate

Nick Grimshaw on when he first met Moss: “It was the weekend before I had my first TV audition, so I was laying off the carbs. She told me to stop being so stupid and go eat some bread. That was the start of our friendship.”

6. The best quote from Kate

On Uncle Phil’s ancient Nokia: “Last summer on Philip’s boat in the Bahamas, everyone’s sending picture messages from their iPhones – he’s the only one that hadn’t even got a signal on the bloody thing!”
