What I see in the mirror: Johnny Mathis

I like the fact that I’m not fat, and I’m very happy that I’m not miserable. I would hate it if I wasn’t at ease looking at myself.

My hair is my best feature, though it’s a lot of trouble because it doesn’t always do what I want it to do. It’s curly and a pretty good length, which I’m glad about. Hair is very important to a man of my age. My three brothers all lost their hair very early and I always hoped I wouldn’t lose mine. Who knows why I didn’t.

My eyes look sad, even though I’m not sad. I think it’s just a matter of getting older. I never noticed it before. Perhaps the sparkle is gone, but I’ll take what I’ve got. I exercise five days a week for an hour and a half, and have done so for about 25 years, so I’m doing what I can.

Fortunately my nose is OK – it always was one of my better features. Someone once wrote that my nose was aquiline, and I had to look it up to know whether that was good or bad: I was pretty pleased.

I think I look like my oldest sister. We have the same facial structure – kind of droopy. Ageing is pretty amazing. I was never conscious of getting older, but every time I look in the mirror, I know how old I am. It doesn’t bother me too much. I have a lot of pictures and record covers lying around that remind me what I looked like when I was young, so, when I see my reflection, I can’t help but go, “Ohh!” with surprise.

Johnny Mathis plays the UK on 8, 10 and 12 April; tickets from ticketline.co.uk.
