Beauty: problem solvers

When so many products claim to solve problems that don’t really exist (seriously, did anyone feel any need for DD creams, feminine wash, lip cleanser and eyebrow conditioner?), it’s pleasing to see some genuinely useful fixers appear on the market (interestingly, often thanks to brands analysing popular Google search terms).

Have you ever spent the best part of an hour trying to scrub glitter polish off your nails, bits of cotton wool lint caught on jagged particles that stick steadfastly where they’re no longer wanted? Well, with Butter London’s brilliant new Glitter Scrubbers (£8), there’s no need. These individually wrapped wipes have two textured sides: scrubby for removal, smooth for sweeping away loose glitter fast.

I’m lip balm mad, but can never find it in my bag when I need it. Now I hang Balmi Cube Lip Balm Coconut (£4.99) from the keyring in my pocket, and can swiftly apply whenever I like.

If you want your foundation to last, but find thick, silicone primers a turn-off (often the case with oily girls), then Smashbox’s new Photo Finish Primer Water (£20) sprays on lightly (either before or after makeup) to do the same job. I also find it doubles up to moisten wet-to-dry shadows, giving them more moisture and slip than plain water.

Finally, if, like me, you routinely have to lock down most mascaras with a sealant, Estée Lauder’s Little Black Primer (£20) will please you no end. Apply on its own for a subtle tint, under mascara to add extra volume, or over it to prevent smudging and running. While hardly world-saving, all these products fill a niggling little gap in your routine.
