When I did the Baftas, everyone said, “Ooh, did the glam squad come in?” Er, no. I do a live BBC London radio show from 3-6pm on Sundays and I had to be at the Baftas at six, so I did my makeup in the morning before I went to work, retouched it quickly in the loo, put on my borrowed Amanda Wakeley outfit and ran down to the taxi.
I love my slap and I wear a lot – I am not denying it. I mix foundation with an anti-ageing primer, then use the Charlotte Tilbury correction pen, which is fantastic – I’ve chosen not to do Botox and you need a bit of concealer when you get to my age.
I’ve always enjoyed making up my eyes. I’ll use an eyeliner pencil and build from there with eye shadow. I have pale hair, so I colour in my brows with a Chanel wax pencil and apply tonnes of mascara. I do my own hair and nails, too. Every three or four weeks, I get my roots done by a friend and I trim the fringe myself. I go to the hairdresser only about twice a year.
I’m not a big fan of tattoos, but when I present the National Lottery on Saturday night, I do the craziest things on my nails. Everyone laughs and asks, “What are you doing, and at your age?” But I like those different colours with funny lines and sprinkles. And why not?
Years ago, I used to feel apologetic about wearing makeup – there was a rather bizarre derogatory article that said you couldn’t be a strong female if you wore it, because you were too intent on what you look like. But now you can be a forward-thinking female and taken seriously even though you like makeup. I celebrate that.
