How I get ready: Kathy Lette

Men are so much luckier than women. Not only do they have the option of growing a moustache, but they only need one pair of shoes and one suit for their entire adult lives. That said, I do love dressing up. During the day, you’ve seen a better-dressed salad; but at night my style is tongue-in-chic. I like clothes that are witty, rather than pretty.

Style fascists are always telling women my age to dress in beige and not show any flesh. But why should we stop wearing minis and Wonderbras? I refuse to give up my pink leopard-skin miniskirts – although it did hurt when my teenage daughter pointed disapprovingly at me in one and said, “You are NOT going out dressed like that. Go back to your room and change immediately.”

As I work on my own most of the day, I crave company – and like nothing better than meeting mates for a little light champagne-swigging.

Like all working mums, I fly by the seat of my pants. Consequently, I spend no time on pampering and preening. With 10 minutes to spare, I leap in the shower, throw on the nearest frock, whack a curler in my hair, spray it to death, do my makeup on the tube, sprint to my destination in flats, then slip on the pair of high heels in my handbag. If you put your foot in your mouth as often as I do, it’s just got to be well shod.

Kathy Lette’s latest novel, Courting Trouble, is published by Black Swan.
