Skincare during a heatwave

It is essential to keep your skin protected in this weather. Always choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (preferably 30 or more). This will protect against both UVB (primarily burning and more often cancer-causing) and UVA (primarily skin-ageing), but must be applied generously to work. Dermatologists recommend a shot-glass-sized measure for each limb, but do remember that if you are exercising or coming into contact with water, you will need to reapply afterwards. Balding or shaven-headed men often forget their scalps, but protection here is very important. I really like Nivea’s new Protect Refresh Cooling Spray, £8.49.

Don’t even think about foundation, powder and any elaborate makeup in this heat. It will look a mess and melt clean off your face within hours. Just apply sunblock, then a tinted moisturiser (I use Origins VitaZing, £28) and some concealer over any spots.

A little bronzer and/or cream blusher gives some nice colour without ruddiness, and a tinted lipbalm with SPF (I like Korres Lip Butter Stick SPF15) is flattering and easy. Most women find mascara indispensable, but switching to a waterproof formula is a good idea in sweaty and humid conditions. Spray your hair with some sunscreen and tie it back to avoid frizz.
